Okay, was wondering if anybody could help me... or do I need professional help? You know the Linksys DSL/Switch Routers that many of us use? Say somebody... forgot the password to access it? What can he do to reset so that perhaps he could access it again with the default "admin" password? Or am I shit out of luck? uhhh... I mean or should this person buy a NEW router and return this one?

uh in the front of the unit there is reset thing use a paper clip and push the inner button continue to hold down on it until the diag led turns on and off completely. this should work cuz i forgot mine too and did this and it worked for me.
for further instructions consult ur manual page 7 of the Etherfast Cable/DSL Routers by Linksys.

Tight! Thanks man... maybe I should just keep things simple from now and leave passwords as "password" or "admin". haha, then I'll probably end up trying to figure out what OTHER people have changed the passwords to...

if anybody is in the market for these DSL/Cable Routers... I suggest you get ANOTHER brand. The new v3 unit I got from linksys is total crap! :thumbs_do

it probably is defective... but it seems like almost all of them are from what I see on forums...
Its the BEFSR41 v3, the new "updated" model of the one we all have at home. its crapola... :thumbs_do
it can be made do work... but the fact is... it does NOT do what its supposed to do reliably :thumbs_do :thumbs_do :thumbs_do :pissed:

okay, adding to the list... Linksys BEFVP41 = CRAP! actually to me now... all Linksys products are crap! I will never buy another Linksys Router type device again, or NetGear. Currently I like D-Link and Belkin, both have been reliable, friendly to use, price is competitive with linksys. Its not user error... since the things I'm doing are simple... the linksys just isn't doing it... like closing ports and DMZ.... it won't close the DMZ! POS :thumbs_do :thumbs_do
this is probably still just the new stuff/shit... after Cisco took over. :thumbs_do :thumbs_do :rolls_eye

i don't have any problem with my wireless linksys router but for the ports, there's too little ports that you could add in. Don't know how the d-link work but i do like the d-link.

I would say for the most part, I'm talking about the NEW Linksys products. My old router at home... pretty much the very first DSL Router ever made works fine... its the new stuff that you can buy in stores that I say is crappy.

I got the D-Link, the Linksys I'm bitching about is yet another one I bought for work. I got it for its VPN feature... but I learned afterwards... the VPN features are not simple to setup and these units are really intended to be at both ends of the connection or at the client end. I wanted it to be the server end. And it sucks because it does not even perform the standard router functions correctly like I said... the DMZ...

I am adding "Motorola" :thumbs_do :thumbs_do :thumbs_do wireless router/network products to my shitless of crap never to buy. I couldn't get the encryption wireless network to work consistantly. I'm not going to get into details about it.. but I have enough knowledge about how to setup wireless networks and if after 4 hours I can't do it. Than either 1) the product is defective and is CRAP! or 2) the product is not user friendly since the average Joe Friday should be able to get it to work.
#1 so far is belkin   for me (trouble free operation)
#2 is D-LINK  , and its only number 2 because my coworker reported getting BSOD when he plugged in a USB wireless NIC to his XP machine. For myself, I've had no problems with D-LINK... evarrrrr.

My review of the Netgear model MR814 v2 wireless router (802.11b)
After spending 2 hours to learn every little nook and cranny of it's admin operations i've got to say this is way better than linksys and i'm happy with netgear even though previous post by dohc says he isn't. (please explain why u don't like netgear?)
But yeah, this model has a lot of add-ons that linksys i don't think has. The wireless is easy to set up and let's me secure it in three different ways (not sure if any other wireless routers do, i'm pretty sure they do but this is the first wireless router i've gotten to explore)
simple plug and play, got to adjust ips, port forwarding, and secure wireless network. let's you block certain websites or domains w/ specific names and then it sends u an email if someone connected to the router trys to access the websites which i think is pretty nifty for offices who want to be "big brother" watchin over
also they let u program a schedule to control specific ip's connected or all comps connected to have limited internet access or complete shut off internet access which i also think is cool for offices
(not cool for the workers of course)
so "in conclusion" i'm happy w/ the netgear ray got for me to play w/ at the apartment
please tell me if anyone had other experiences with netgear so i know what troubles or up's to look for.
testing it out, so far stayin online, no dropped connections (but then again it's been only 1/2 an hour).
oh yeah, another plus, you can control the wireless so only MAC addresses you've entered into netgear's preferences are allowed to connect to the wireless network which i thought was realllllyyyy cool.
my review for now... 4 stars out of 5, will wait and see if i need to downgrade this.

I was going to give that specific unit a try. I didn't like the first one I got because it is definitely crap... I should have returned it.. but thats my lazy ass' fault. That netgear cannot even be reset so I cannot even get into the Admin menu.
The features you mentioned are available on many wireless routers now, I think Belkin and Linksys has many of the same security features except for maybe the email thing.
Remember I was about to buy that unit and give it a try.... but since Ray said you guys need one and I didn't, I let you guys have it. It was the last one in that store.

I have the linksys one and it has all those functions but not sure about the email thing. I'll check later. The linksys one is easy to hook up and I've been using it for 2-3 years now with no problems. I love linksys.

my dead linksys router (steady burning diag red light) seems to still function as a switch. I'm gonna bring it work and use it as a switch.
